Pessimism Is a Choice

This time and place is definitely a tough situation that’s difficult for us to grasp. The COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented for most of us and it is an unfamiliar position that we’ve been put into. Despite the turbulent and uncertain times we currently face, there’s still good floating around. Greatness and positivity are within us, waiting to be unleashed, but occasionally, we succumb to the tendencies of allowing one horrific circumstance to limit our forward progression. The world may seem like it is on pause. The disruption of our regular routines may cause us to feel lost, but our comfort is within the depths of our souls. Instead of fretting about what has been taken away from us, we have to take responsibility for our own actions and take initiative in doing what is truly beneficial for us. Right now is the perfect opportunity to refine our spiritual, physical, and mental health. Though we may feel alone or limited, we can invest our time into prayer, meditation, exercising, reading, etc. We may feel defined by our occupation or school, but in the end, we have to remember who we are. We can’t lose sight of ourselves, and at this very moment, we have to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones to do the things that we’ve been neglecting. Paralysis is ultimately a decision of our own and we cannot let this restrict us from getting to where we need to be.

Even if this moment feels like it’s been lasting for an eternity, nothing lasts forever–good or bad. So with this being said, we can’t allow our lives to be solely negative. Pessimism is a choice that’ll only contribute to our own suffering, perishing, and decline. We all have the option to seize the day. It may not be easy or conventional, but it’s better than dwelling on things that are out of our control.

Instead of analyzing all of the negative aspects of being in quarantine, we ought to magnify the increased luxury of time that has been presented to us. The past may have felt more fluid, but this is an opportunity to expand on what many of us have lacked in the past. Time is one of the greatest, and rather scarce, resources in the world that we all have, and now, the supply of time is in our favor. We can only look forward to the options we have right now. We can use this time to enhance our independence and see how we’re still able to fulfill our potential. It’s up to us to see how this is an avenue of possibility. The journey of our growth is not stunted nor delayed. We may be unable to get out, but we can look introspectively and refine ourselves. There’s always room for improvement, and with the time that we have now, there’s so much work we can engage in. This is a chance for us to challenge ourselves like never before.

We can’t engage in self-pity when there’s still so much for us to accomplish. Our lives are not over at all! The journey is in the process, and this doesn’t need to be a time of adversity. We’ll be on the way to where we need to be as long as we fully utilize what we’ve had less of beforehand.
