Mr. Green said “It was enough getting my feet on the floor, the rest is a bonus”.

As I heard these words come out of Mr. Green’s mouth after I asked how his day was, I felt caught off guard because I heard words that I did not know I needed to hear. Has that ever happened to you? Someone gives you a piece of advice that hits you like a freight train and all you can do is studder on each word as you try to respond with, “thank you”.

You see, we can all testify to how hard it is to remain thankful about life. Life is hard – and thus, being thankful even for the hard times is…hard. I wanted to share a little about myself. I am 21 years old and quite honestly I think so highly of myself. I mean I think so highly of myself that I get stressed out when I’m not in the “position” I feel I am supposed to be in. I put “position” in  quotation marks because “position” can be anything for me: an internship, a job, a relationship, progress on a task – anything. Sometimes I even get frustrated when the ideas I have for Un-Associated don’t go as planned. Which can definitely happen a lot. The fact of the matter is, I have a standard for myself, and when I don’t reach that standard for any reason, I get frustrated. And don’t even get me started with when I see other people in “positions” that I think I deserve more than them.

When Mr. Green, the security guard at the Hyatt Regency hotel, told me those words – God through a brick at my head and said, “bro, helloooooo?”. I was here, tired and depressed, for a number of reasons surrounding not being in the “position” I felt I should be in and God, through Mr. Green, reminded me that I was never promised that I would even be able to get out of bed today. He reminded me that I have two, working lungs, and can breathe without thinking about it or having to wheel around a tank. He reminded me that the fact that I still have a life to be depressed about WAS a blessing – scratch that – a noteworthy “position” in itself.

There’s something I want to say to all the grinders out there. We all have our dreams of where we want to be in life. We all have our desired “positions”. I want you to know that there’s something in your life to be thankful for RIGHT NOW. You can live, love and be at peace NOW. Do not undermine the years you live today while chasing your dreams for tomorrow. Today you have been blessed and have purpose.

With that being said, fall in love with the journey to your dreams. Remember, your dreams are only worth as much work, obedience and patience you put into it. When you get there…to that desired “ position”, you will know how much it costed you, and that will bring you more happiness than the physical “position” itself. We look at a lot of people born rich and famous and question why they have so many issues. Unfortunately, the problem for some is that they never paid for what they have, so never find happiness in it’s worth. Don’t wish for things to get easier on you, wish for God to help you activate the tools you have to conquer them.

Thank you for reading this piece. I hope you enjoy your “position” and be a blessing in the scope God gives you every new day.
