Seeking the Lord While He Might Be Found
Communion with God is such an essential part of our faith. Throughout the Bible, we see how God has interacted with prophets and believers through communion, by speaking to them, guiding them, reassuring and comforting them, and revealing His will. In these stories, we see how God wove His will into and through these people’s lives to accomplish great things. A commonality among these examples is that they sought the Lord, communed with Him, and He responded.
Are We Asking or Praising in His Presence?
I have been challenged in my time spent with God. And admittedly, I definitely can increase my quiet time with the Lord. I have been convicted that my prayer time lately has been spent asking more than dwelling in His presence by praising, worshiping, and meditating on the Word. The easy excuse is that life is busy and we have many obligations that demand our attention, but Psalm 127:1-2 says,
“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep.”
When we labor and toil without involving God in our lives regularly, it is all in vain.
Communing with God Daily and Intentionally
Our faith requires a daily, concerted effort to commune with God and let Him lead our day. How can we know God’s will for our lives if we don’t regularly communicate with Him? Even if it’s just a matter of taking five minutes to block out our minds from what the day may bring, or what tasks we need to accomplish, or what stressors are awaiting us when we walk out of the door, and dedicating that moment to worshiping, praising, and meditating on a verse from Scripture.
Additionally, communion with God doesn’t end with our quiet time with God. Even in our daily work and through our interactions with others, we can allow God to use us and guide us to accomplish His will. By constantly keeping Him present in our minds, His love and light can then shine through us onto others. This, too, is a form of communion with God.
The Omnipresence of God
Psalm 139, written by King David, beautifully expresses God’s inescapable love and presence. He is always there. On our best days and on our darkest days, there He is. What an honor it is that the Creator of the universe loves each of us individually and cares about all that concerns us.
So as children of God, how can we take such an honor for granted?
You are fearfully and wonderfully made by the Creator, and He craves time with us. I think this truth is especially encouraging to remember when we feel distant from God, wonder if He hears us, or feel riddled with guilt or shame. Especially in those moments, He is there.
The Lord is Near to His Children
Psalm 145:18-19 says, “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; He hears their cry and saves them.”
This week, I encourage us all to be in continual communion with God. Choose a Bible verse to meditate on throughout the week. Set aside intentional time for God alone. And in all of the work that you do, no matter how significant or insignificant it may seem, dedicate it to the Lord. Let your conduct towards others be driven by love and truth, embracing the command to be the light of the world and salt of the Earth (Matthew 5:13-16).
I pray that God gives us the grace always to desire and seek communion with Him. I pray that the Holy Spirit reminds us of God’s inescapable love for each of us and encourages our souls to strive continually for unity with the Lord.
